Information Literacy

Information literacy is essential for lifelong learning and empowers individuals and societies.Weiner,(2010).
To become informed people we need to be able to learn from many different resources. To learn we need to be able to evaluate information from books, newspapers, television, radio, the internet via blogs, wikis, social network site e.g. Face book, YouTube etc.

To be leaders in the world of educators we need to stay up to date with all the above learning tools. It is important to be aware of what fact is and what just someone’s thoughts are. With more students now going to the internet for information we as library staff need to be able to direct them to reputable websites. We need to teach them how to research, collate and present their findings in the correct manner with all relevant referencing.

Libraries can use many of the Web2.0 tools we are exploring at the moment to create a learning environment where people want to be. We can use blogs to encourage discussion about the latest releases of books and movies or to inform our patrons of the things we are doing. We can invite comments from the patrons.
We could also use YouTube and Flicker to create book trailers so patrons can see what books we have available.
